Why do most credit cards have 16 digits, but i’ve seen some that have just 12 digits?

MC and Visa have 12 digits, AMEX uses 15 (I think) and store credit cards can use between 9-16…thats just from having so many…not a good idea!
Mastercard, Visa and Discover all have 16 digits. American Express are 15 digits (I believe). Many store credit cards have shorter account numbers – that will vary by store.
